Brief: winnow-grammar passes its own clippy gate again (src/rt.rs piece_ranges, j8’s Found)

Facts: Traps already met

Score: unblocks the push of j8’s backend commit (winnow-grammar’s CI runs cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings, .github/workflows/ci.yaml 39 and 104, so the push the main session makes is red without it), and with it j6 run 2 (#1019 step 3d); S=A, O=~0.05M tokens, C=~0.05M tokens; one line in the backend, nothing in Nikaia.

Problem

j8 (report j8-1019-cut-item-frame.md.report.md) found that winnow-grammar 4f8e6691, and so its own commit e9de602c on top, fails cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings with clippy 1.97: src/rt.rs:711, clippy::single_range_in_vec_init, in piece_ranges:

    if count == 1 || input.is_empty() {
        return vec![0..input.len()];
    }

The intent is right (one piece, the whole input, as one Range element); the lint fires because vec![a..b] is often a mistake for (a..b).collect().

Decision (architect, 2026-10-31: obvious, no language change)

Say the one-element vector so the lint does not read it as a range-to-vec mistake, e.g. vec![(0..input.len())] if clippy 1.97 and the newest stable accept it, else std::iter::once(0..input.len()).collect(). No #[allow]: the code says what it means. Behaviour unchanged.

Locations

Your own clone /home/user/winnow-grammar (j8 left it on local main = e9de602c, one commit above origin/main 4f8e6691; if it is missing: git clone https://github.com/keywan-ghadami/winnow-grammar /home/user/winnow-grammar && git -C /home/user/winnow-grammar am /home/user/Nikaia/docs/briefs/tools/j8-1019-cut-item-frame.patch on 4f8e6691). Never ~/.cargo/git/checkouts/, never a [patch] in the Nikaia checkout.

To build

  1. The line above; then in the clone cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings clean with this machine’s stable and, when rustup check shows a newer one installed (1.99.1 is), with that too (cargo +1.99.1 clippy ...): fix any other lint it shows in the same commit and name each in Body:. cargo test and cargo fmt --check green.
  2. Commit in the clone on top of e9de602c (message in the crate’s style, the Attribution: lines as trailer; no CHANGELOG entry: no behaviour change), then git -C /home/user/winnow-grammar format-patch -1 -o /home/user/Nikaia/docs/briefs/tools/ and rename the file to docs/briefs/tools/j10-1019-backend-clippy.patch; name it under Files:.

Done when

clippy, test and fmt clean in the clone on both toolchains; the patch file in docs/briefs/tools/; the report says Pushed: winnow-grammar <sha> in Body: and Needs: help from main session: push winnow-grammar e9de602c and <sha> to keywan-ghadami/winnow-grammar main. Commit the patch and the report in Nikaia with target/fast/nikaia run scripts/commit.nika -- REPORT. Changelog: none.

Stop and report if

a lint needs a change in behaviour or public API (say which, Needs: architect decision); any edit outside the clone, the patch and the report. Delete /home/user/winnow-grammar/target at the end (the clone stays) and report GB freed. Stop about 10 turns before max_turns, commit what is finished and report partial.

Not yours

Nikaia’s Cargo.toml pin (j6 run 2 moves it after the push); everything in the Nikaia checkout but the patch and your report.

Rules (CLAUDE.md; this block is pasted into every brief, also a fix-forward)

Report (at most 15 lines, to exactly /home/user/Nikaia/docs/briefs/tools/j10-1019-backend-clippy.md.report.md)

Fields of docs/architect.md, Briefs and reports: Result: done|noop|partial|blocked (the bare word alone on that line: Result: done, never a summary after it, which cuts the batch, b869a 2026-10-27; Owner: is a question for the owner or none, never a role), Files, Commit, Body (optional, one paragraph for the commit message), Fixes, Pushed, Tests, Gate (green|red), Deviation, Found, Needs, Changelog, Owner, Disk freed, and for a move Rs2nika: (the kept N of M lines of rs2nika --score, then the three costliest hand edits; none for a task that moves no Rust, none (redesign) for a brief with Shape: redesign and no Convert: line). none where nothing, and then the bare word: Deviation: none (a note) cuts the batch (batch.nika compares exactly); a note goes into the commit message. Found: is only for a defect outside your change (it cuts the batch); a process event such as another session resetting or rewriting your files is no Found:, it goes under Needs: (m3a 2026-10-28); a converter draft that came out wrong is no Found:, it is one of the costliest edits under Rs2nika:, which the converter lane reads (e12-4b 2026-10-27); how you solved your own step goes into the commit message. Deviation: is only a step of the brief built otherwise than written or not built (a choice the brief left to you, such as keep what X needs and say so, is no deviation: it goes into the commit message; nor is building two steps in one commit when every step is built, e12-3a 2026-10-27, nor a step another commit on develop already built, shown by your test failing with that commit’s change reverted, b889 2026-10-27: name the commit in Body:, nor a test’s expected .stdout/.stderr taken from what the program really prints where the brief’s sketch of it was short or wrong, b934 2026-10-29: say so in Body:, nor a lowering that follows the ADR governing it where the brief’s expected lowering contradicts that ADR, b933 2026-10-29: name the ADR in Body:, nor a lowering other than the brief’s where rustc cannot take the brief’s, b1029 2026-10-31: say why in Body:, nor re-keying an allow-list entry (KNOWN) whose hash changed for the same program and the same reason, b-fixforward-sweep2 2026-10-28: say so in Body:, nor an existing test’s expected .stdout/.stderr updated because your change rightly changes the message it prints, b1012b 2026-10-31: name the test in Body:); how you verified (e.g. a test not run against the unfixed compiler) goes under Tests:. A noop says why under Tests: (what was probed), not under Deviation:. Final answer, one line: done <sha>, report <path> (or BLOCKED: ... / PUSH REJECTED ...).
